A general alarm fire swept the cell block at Wildwood City Hall in New Jersey. A policeman fought through flames to free 13 prisoners, nine escaped in the chaos and one was recaptured. None of the detainees were held for serious crimes.
Racial violence erupted in New York City and Baltimore as demonstrations and clashes intensified across the nation. Police cordoned a Bronx diner area after white and Black groups clashed during a protest over alleged discriminatory hiring. In Baltimore, over 100 integrationists faced violence and arrests near Gwynns Falls Amusement Park.
There were no fatalities on Armstrong County highways during the long July 4 weekend despite heavy traffic. County coroner John Kennedy credited alert drivers and vigilant policing. A Route 68 collision near Mast Brady caused about 450 dollars in damage with no injuries, involving Robert Koehler and Charles Heilman. A stop-sign violation by John Schmidt at Route 28 and Route 66 nearby led to another, injury-free crash with Joseph Carrier.

John Sullivan age 19 of Harmony Road Butler County drowned Sunday while swimming at a farm pond near Zelienople with three companions who could not swim. His death was among at least five drownings in the state during the four day July 4 holiday period per United Press International survey.
Harrisburg UPI reports top Republican lawmakers meet Gov. Scranton to map a strategy on school district reorganization and free bus transportation for private and parochial students as the 1963 session aims to end by July 31. The weakened school consolidation bill passed the Senate and could move from the House Education Committee. Scranton opposes the current form seeking revisions. The Justice Department ruling on transportation for private and parochial pupils adds to the debate.
Frederick William Spears 25 confessed after weeks of questioning to the killings of two housewives, Virginial Wagner 35 and Francis Eihard 25, in December and May respectively. Sheriff calls the case highly unusual lacking physical evidence. Spears previously served seven years for strangling his sister Patricia Ann 16.
Paul Weaver aged 20 from Indiana County injured his right hand when his thumb was amputated during water skiing on the Allegheny River and was not admitted. Richard Daniel, 30 of Ford City sustained a head laceration after diving into a pool and was sent home after X rays. Wade Crissman, 25 of Worthington RD 1 was admitted in satisfactory condition with a fractured right leg after a badminton fall.
Emer McMasters of New ment, 57, was treated at Armstrong County Memorial Hospital for a fractured left wrist after falling from a hay wagon on Bethlehem Road. He was not admitted.
Washington unions and Kennedy administration near a decision on averting a nationwide railroad walkout. Labor Secretary Wirtz plans to report to President Kennedy on possible congressional action to compel arbitration. Railroads would implement new work rules eliminating up to 37,000 firemen Thursday, unless Congress acts to halt the plan. Unions reject the proposal as thin compulsory arbitration and vow to strike if work rules advance. Management supports the plan, aiming for 20 days of negotiation and a two year test with government arbitration on unresolved issues. The carrier and union positions are under consideration as possible seizure or compelled bargaining options are discussed.
Navy and Coast Guard planes hunt the 63 foot Snow Bay in the Caribbean after the rickety craft vanished seven days ago off Jamaica with 40 aboard. Debris and one unidentified body found. the ship departed Kingston for a drift fishing voyage south of Jamaica.
Joseph Bellas president of Local 479 United Brick & Clay Workers Union said talks to end the 20 day strike at Continental Clay Products Co Kit tanning may occur after company president John McNees requested a union field rep meeting. The strike began June 19 over hospital coverage and affects about 54 employees.
In New York 67,000 Jehovah's Witnesses gathered at Yankee Stadium for the convention's opening. By week’s end officials expect the total to reach about 125,000.
The East Brady Area Industrial Development Corporation hosted its second annual ox roast drawing 1,850 meals and a crowd that used nearly 1,300 pounds of meat. Hydros and water ski exhibitions entertained attendees while a street dance followed with music by a Clarion group and honored guests.
A naval jet crashed into a bathhouse at Green Hill Day Camp in Willow Grove during a thunderstorm, killing seven people including four children. Marine Capt. John W. Butler ejected safely and faced naval questioning. Dozens injured, many Philadelphia area residents affected.
