Sept 2 Wis. John D Smith a Third Wisconsin veteran in the Spanish American War brought seed corn from Porto Rico planted June 17 last. The stalks reach nearly fourteen feet, with nine foot tassels forming. stalks resemble heavy native corn with broader longer leaves showing vigorous growth for maturity.
A September morning blaze ripped through the nine story Rokinson building in New York, causing about 5000 dollars in damage. Police spotted the fire and 18 watchmen fled the structure in panic. Firefighter Steil reported two men were believed inside, names unavailable.
