Populists Shake Hands as Labor Party Splits

The populist convention adopted the conference report and shook hands with the Democratic body. The labor faction rejected it 86 to 0, fearing Democrats would cede gubernatorial candidate control. Labor began nominating separately, with Ferguson 93 and Hogan 87 after McDonald withdrew.

Democratic Nominees emerge in coalition free assembly

In a state party convention the Democrats won nominations for lieutenant governor secretary of state and one elector as Labor and Populists split. Ex Governor Joseph Toole initially declined governor’s nomination then accepted by acclamation amid health concerns and renewed pledges to lead. Thomas C. Bach was brought forward as a candidate during committee talks.

Allied assault on Pei Tang forts at Taku area

At daylight four thousand Russians three thousand Germans and one thousand French troops with Austrian marines attacked the Pei Tang forts. The forts replied. by noon bombardment ceased as the forts withdrew leaving over 3,000 men to escape. Three allied soldiers killed and fifty wounded by exploding mines. British Italian support late.

Milburn Wins Nomination for Associate Justice in Montana Convention

George Kt Milburn of Miles City was selected by acclamation for associate justice after Hon. nomination withdrawn. Milburn pledged loyalty to duties and stated a Douglass Democrat stance. Auditor candidates A H Barret, A C Rodgers, and George M Hagen competed, with Barret 187, Hayes 119, Rodgers 73. Higgins named for lieutenant governor and Hayes won secretary of state 803 to 177.

Populist Convention Nominates State Officers and Electors

At the evening session Chairman Peter Breen called for nominations for congressman. Caldwell Edwards of Gallatin county was nominated by acclamation. J. H. Calderhead of Lewis and Clarke was nominated for state auditor. his name was placed before the convention by J. M. Clements of Helena and the nomination was made unanimous after Oker withdrew. Alexander Makel of Butte and John Donovan of Cascade were placed for attorney general. Donovan was chosen by acclamation after Makel withdrew. Omer Hoskins of Flathead county was selected for presidential elector but declined. Dr. Oliver Leiser of Anaconda was nominated in his place. A state central committee was chosen with members from Broadwater, Cascade, Chateau, Custer, Deer Lodge, Flathead, Gallatin, Granite, Jefferson, Lewis and Clarke, Madison and others.

Labor Party Adopts State Ticket As Convention Adjourns

The labor convention adjourned in good spirits after placing the democratic-populist electoral ticket on the state ticket. Delegates chose a full central committee with Silver Bow leadership, electing J. J. Quinn McDonald and M. P. Haggerty amid withdrawals, and Daniel McDonald as committeeman at large. Judge Milburn addressed briefly before adjournment.

Forces repelled at Pei Tang forts as invaders evacuated

Admiral Remey reports from Taku that Russians and Germans and Austrians advanced on the Fei Tang forts. Fire burned through the night until evacuation at nine in the morning. Europeans raised colors at eleven. Twenty five Russians and Germans reportedly died by mine explosion. only five Chinese were killed, per Commander Wise's account.

A letter from a First Montana regiment member in Manila recalls two anniversaries: the 23d of August marking their landing in 1898 and the homeward voyage a year later in 1899. It describes the anxious voyage, sighting Manila Bay, and the squadron’s warm welcome as ships left with cheers and dipping flags.

Four masked men held up an express car near Woodlawn, northwest of Lincoln, demanding the safe be opened. The messenger could not open it and the robbers fled after a struggle, leaving with the money and escaping.

Veteran passes away in Chicago after health battle

In Chicago a veteran named Cal Weed, known as Col. Wood, died of angina pectoris. He collapsed at home an hour before death after heavy breathing. his wife alerted relatives but he could not be roused. He had served twenty five years in the Grand Army.

Quiet at Shenandoah as troops quell coal strike unrest

Philadelphia reports quiet across the Shenandoah strike region after nearly 3000 troops were sent in to halt voting and curb violence. Thousands more soldiers stand ready in Scranton Wilkes Barre and Philadelphia. Striker wavering observed, with possible return to work if an early settlement occurs. An ex Alton road official, born in New York in 1849, is noted in the account.

Charles Murph a New York brand son of Feli Murphy ex assemblyman wandered across the country since July. In Denver he wore overalls and juniper while asking to hire his wife. He could not recall events since a difficult period marked by excessive use of patent bitters prescribed as a tonic.

In New York on September 2 a funeral fund collected by the city unions was sent to Calveston by Mayor Thos. The effort included clothing and goods donated by the community for the bereaved families.

One Man Train Robber Strikes Westbound Northern Pacific

Spokane reports a lone highwayman boarded the westbound Northern Pacific at an Idaho stop and robbed sleepers between Athol and Rathdrum. He escaped with jewelry and cash estimated around 400 to 100 dollars in value, fired on by the conductor, and fled toward Rathdrum. A $2,000 reward is posted as Sheriff Bradbury leads a posse tracking him three miles south of Athol. No injuries reported.
