Allied assault on Pei Tang forts at Taku area
At daylight four thousand Russians three thousand Germans and one thousand French troops with Austrian marines attacked the Pei Tang forts. The forts replied. by noon bombardment ceased as the forts withdrew leaving over 3,000 men to escape. Three allied soldiers killed and fifty wounded by exploding mines. British Italian support late.

George Kt Milburn of Miles City was selected by acclamation for associate justice after Hon. nomination withdrawn. Milburn pledged loyalty to duties and stated a Douglass Democrat stance. Populist Convention Nominates State Officers and Electors
At the evening session Chairman Peter Breen called for nominations for congressman. Caldwell Edwards of Gallatin county was nominated by acclamation. J. H. Calderhead of Lewis and Clarke was nominated for state auditor. his name was placed before the convention by J. M. Clements of Helena and the nomination was made unanimous after Oker withdrew. Alexander Makel of Butte and John Donovan of Cascade were placed for attorney general. Donovan was chosen by acclamation after Makel withdrew. Omer Hoskins of Flathead county was selected for presidential elector but declined. Dr. Oliver Leiser of Anaconda was nominated in his place. A state central committee was chosen with members from Broadwater, Cascade, Chateau, Custer, Deer Lodge, Flathead, Gallatin, Granite, Jefferson, Lewis and Clarke, Madison and others.

In Chicago a veteran named Cal Weed, known as Col. Wood, died of angina pectoris. He collapsed at home an hour before death after heavy breathing. his wife alerted relatives but he could not be roused. He had served twenty five years in the Grand Army.

One Man Train Robber Strikes Westbound Northern Pacific
Spokane reports a lone highwayman boarded the westbound Northern Pacific at an Idaho stop and robbed sleepers between Athol and Rathdrum.
