Quiet second day of anthracite strike in Hazelton district

Hazelton Pa September 18 The second day of the anthracite coal strike opened quietly with unions keeping firm. Officials led picket duty while many mines ran with reduced crews or halted work. Affected areas McAdoo Audenfeld Yorktown and nearby collieries saw smaller crews and guarded mines to deter non union workers. A march by about 100 strikers headed to Colleraine but returned. Hungarian women urged quitting miners and several drivers were held up promising not to return to the mines. By noon about 100 more workers had joined the strike. north side mines largely operated with reduced force. No serious injuries reported.

Atlanta puts to sea in new commission status

The cruiser Atlanta, just recommissioned after extensive repairs at the navy yard, will be stationed on the Atlantic coast for several months and later join the South Atlantic station to replace the Montgomery which has been sent to New York for yard work. Captain F. G. Pendleton will command the Atlanta while Commander John P. Morrill moves to waiting orders. The Montgomery will undergo general repairs before rejoining service. The South Atlantic squadron will include the Chicago Wilmington and Atlanta.
