Joseph Allen was hanged in Helena in a drizzling rain before about 100 spectators shortly after 6 am. The execution occurred three hours earlier than first announced after corrections to the timing and the straps were adjusted as he walked with the sheriff, feet free.
Early in July 125 1888 the crime for which Joseph H Allen was hanged was committed. Allen and J B Reynolds alias J A Leech were partners. Reynolds a 40 year old expert sheep shearer had lived in Montana as hunter trapper and shepherd for years. They traveled from Idaho into Lewis and Clarke county intending to shear sheep during the summer.
The West conference session opened with William Wirt Howe in the chair amid weak attendance. The day featured a brutal account of a murder and execution, with Allen dying in Montana after a long, nerve tested ordeal, as deputies read the death warrant and a noose ended his fate. The convention also tangled over a committee appointment rule amid party strife between pro and anti trust factions.
The account details a public execution's final minutes with doctors pronouncing death after a long struggle. Notables including Sheriff Conley, Sheriff Curran, Under Sheriff Murphy and Chief Lovell watched as the body was interred at a Catholic cemetery. Allen thanks supporters and laments the governor's denial of clemency in a letter to the public.
The Helena case recounts Allen fleeing after a fatal confrontation with Reynolds, robbing his body, and later confessing self defense. Captured in Oakland Oregon, Allen faced trial before Judge Henry C. Smith, with a jury of Helena residents delivering a first degree murder verdict and a December or September hang date. Governor Smith declined clemency, and Judge Smith resentenced Allen to hang.
