A Montana market ad promotes Peck & Hauckhaus boys and youths high grade clothing from New York City. Featuring Scotch tweed suits, navy cheviots, fancy vests, and gray corduroy pants, sizes 7 to 14, with prices from 96.50 to 4.00 for sets and $1.25 for pants, highlighting fit and quality for school wear.
A Gulf coast hurricane wreaked havoc on Galveston Texas with reports of up to a thousand lives lost and extensive property damage. Streets filled with debris and bodies, ruined hotels, collapsed saloons, and wrecked wharves marked a city near total ruin as rescue efforts began and water receded.
Recounted by W M Wall of Houston, the rescue of Mrs Wall and others by James Black at Morgan's Point during a violent flood. Black ferried people to safety amid four-foot waters, saving Mrs Wall and her party before perishing with Louis Braquet.
Waterlogged Sabine Pass and Port Arthur endured the weekend storm with minimal building loss. The town’s pier and a Gates and Skywood pier were washed away, the dredge Florida sank at Taylor Bayou mouth, and the life-saving station tower only shifted. Two white men, Guenaf and Albert Deatridge, are feared dead on the jetties.
Houston reports describe Galveston and surrounding Texas towns as devastated by Saturday's hurricane. Estimates put dead at 1500 to 2000 with multi million dollar property losses. Streets flooded, wires tangled, bodies among debris, and relief trains the only link to Galveston as crops across the district suffer severe damage.
Washington responds as Mr Stillane of Houston reports to the mayor and citizens committee in Galveston that money food and clothing are needed immediately from state and nation. The president instructs the secretary of war to furnish tents and provisions to the flood victims and expresses sympathy. A telegram to Governor Sayers confirms the action but no reply from the governor as yet.
London dispatch reports Chung Li, Pekin military commandant responsible for the German minister's murder, has been arrested and is confined under German jurisdiction.
Washington dispatch reports the Chinese minister Li Hung Chang has received an imperial edict giving him extraordinary authority to negotiate peace without imperial reference. The edict, dated two weeks prior, enables him to settle terms at his discretion and credibly counters prior objections to his negotiating power. Minister Wu delivered the document to the state department.
London dispatch says the Chinese minister has received credentials to begin peace negotiations. It is believed similar powers have been granted to Chinese ministers in other capitals and their credentials aim to satisfy American and European governments.
Washington dispatch reports that Pekin is to serve as a camp for foreign troops while powers seek settlement elsewhere. The Chinese government is not expected to allow business with the foreign legation as the Russian legation departs for Tien Tsin and the foreign army remains.
A message from Houston dated Sept 11 reports Galveston storm destruction of 10,100,000 dollars in property and 1,500 lives, sent via New Orleans to a southern newspaper correspondent. The note notes national wid asked for.
In San Francisco on September 1 a grand minicen tennial celebration featured a parade of Native Sons veterans from Civil, Spanish American, and Mexican wars, municipal and fraternal groups totaling over 20 000 marchers. Governor Gage and the island marshal reviewed the column on Van Ness avenue as about half a million spectators watched. Floats symbolized gold digging days and modern commercial progress.
Helena Montana September 10 It is learned that Governor Smith will not disturb the courts in the Lucey case. He left for a hunting trip and instructed his secretary to reply that he cannot interfere with district court Silver Bow and state supreme court judgments. A bid for habeas corpus via Judge Knowles in Spokane is unlikely to succeed.
