Scranton Pa Oct 23 Thomas Nicholas president of district No 1 United Mine Workers said the end of the strike is near and a meeting of district and national officers is planned for tomorrow with positive action likely if coal companies guarantee a 10 percent raise to April 1 Wilkesbarre Coal Co was closed after an attack by women and boys shots from nearby houses guarded coal bank then police withdrew from the bank to the breaker crowd of strikers reportedly tore up 200 feet of railroad track and lit a tool house fire by this afternoon all quiet at the works

Court reprieve ends before Madison's execution resentence

A year ago Fayette county circuit court Judge Montgomery sentenced Lud Madison a Black man to hang on January 14 at the state penitentiary in Moundsville for murder. A nine day respite was granted by Gov. Atkinson two days before the date. The judge died before the reprieve expired and Madison cannot be resentenced as his appeal was pending with the deceased jurist.
