Death of John Sherman End of a Long Public Career

Washington mourns Hon. John Sherman founder of a long public life spanning the House, Senate, Treasury and State, who died after 36 hours of near unconsciousness at age 102. Born 1823 in Lancaster Ohio he shaped U S policy from 1861 onward and inspired colleagues like Logan Conkling and Sumner. Interment will be in Mansfield Ohio with services in Washington and Mansfield.

Inventor Henry Miller of Chappaqua Dies at Eighty

Henry Miller of Chappaqua New York died at age eighty. He invented the steam and air brake, patent issued January 2 1856, influencing brakes used widely.
