Meet All Demands Coal Operators Agree to All Demands

Philadelphia October 17. A conference between coal operators and mine workers representatives reached a settlement. The Philadelphia and Reading Coal and Iron company withdraws the sliding scale and grants a ten percent wage advance through April 1, 1901, with future grievances to be addressed. Lehigh Valley and individual operators to issue similar notices, ending the strike.

Hazelton Strikers Eye Anthracite Operators' Action

Earl Attacks American Jockeys at London Meeting

At the Jockey Club session on October 12 Earl of Durham criticized American jockeys for in and out riding and blamed their prominence for poor turf conditions. He warned Newmarket risks becoming a cosmopolitan dumping ground and feared English trainers and riders may be driven out. He lamented fewer opportunities for English youths aspiring to be jockeys.

Prisoners Captured by Insurgents on Marinduque Island

Manila reports full details of Capt. D. Shields and his command captured east of Torrijos and later delivered to Gen. Hart at Buena Vista. After ambush and heavy fire, Shields was wounded and the group surrendered amid scarce ammunition. Reinforcements of 1,300 troops moved to occupy towns on Marinduque. prisoners received care during confinement.

Typhoon wrecks and loss across Japanese archipelago

News from Victoria B C dated October 17 reports a powerful September typhoon reaching the entire Japanese group. Vast property damage and heavy loss of life followed. Hundreds of houses collapsed or flooded. Fires burned in Tokyo. Many vessels were wrecked or endangered, including Unato Maru and Yachijo Maru, with crews lost.
