Shafter Retires on Sixty-Fourth Birthday

Shafter, who has served as brigadier general in the regular army and major general of volunteers, retires from the regular army by law today on his 64th birthday. He will stay in command of the Department of the Pacific until relieved or mustered out by July 1, 1901, when enlistments of all volunteer forces in the Spanish American War era end.
