Leo Bernis the starving poet in Paris tale
A homeless young poet Leo Bernis, once praised by a Philanthropist priest, starves in Paris after failed publication offers. He endures hunger, sleepless nights, and menial copying work until a compassionate woman leads him to a basement room where she helps him amid shared tears.
Margot the Castaway Nurtures a Poet’s Kindness
In a stark cottage, Margot shelters Leo Bernis a destitute poet. She feeds him, shares warmth and coffee, and speaks with rough honesty as he reveals his verses. He calls her Margot but she rebuffs, then names Mars as a mysterious epithet. He leaves influenced by her mercy and calls her queenly hand his kiss.

Heating power of coal and wood compared in Rural New Yorker
A Rural New Yorker discussion reports experimental results on heating values. One pound of charcoal heats 73 pounds of water from 230 to 212 degrees, and one pound of anthracite heats 70 pounds of water, while one pound of dry wool heats 35 pounds of water. Dry wood averages 12 percent moisture, making coal roughly equivalent to three cords of wood in heat output. Open fires lose about three quarters of heat up the chimney versus stoves with dampers.
