Capetown May 29 Lord Roberts yesterday announced to his troops the annexation of the Free State, which will hereafter be called the Orange Silver State. The dispatches indicate rapid British movement toward Johannesburg and a likely entry into the Transvaal capital within days.

Corrector Snyder Reports Japanese Unemployed in Seattle

Snyder of Seattle notes Japanese residents without work in the city. The investigation reveals large numbers, with more than three times 28 landed in Victoria and 48 brought to Sound ports. Two Men Shot in St Louis Street Strike Clashes

In St Louis on May 24 a Sixth Street line car was stopped by crowd obstructions at Broadway and Miller. The motorman and conductor fired at least 25 shots into the crowd wounding William Brennan in the knee and Dolly Mitchell in the wrist. Both workers were arrested.

Two Of Seventy One Japanese Pass Tacoma Inquiry

A special board in Tacoma examined 71 Japanese aboard the Glenogle after their rejection by Immigration Inspector Walker. Only two passed the examination satisfactorily while 60 were rejected outright and 9 more narrowly avoided rejection upon consulate guarantees to secure employment within 60 days. Several were refused for infectious disease or as contract laborers. The Glenogle had brought 354 Japanese to Tacoma on this trip, marking an unusually high rejection rate and highlighting local unemployment concerns.
