Rebellion Drives Back Near Baliuag in Manila Front

General Otis reports the Third Infantry returning to Baliuag where they faced morning noon and evening assaults. Two killed and 13 wounded among U S troops. Enemy left 16 dead, many wounded, and prisoners on the field. Kansas and Montana regiments attacked near San Fernando, driving the foe through rice fields, with 50 dead 38 wounded and 28 prisoners. Lawton returns with MacArthur to front to replace volunteers.

Filipinos Pleased As Philippine Commission Leaves Manila

Manila reports the Filipino commissioners departed by special train under a flag of truce and expected to return soon. President Gonzaga praised the courtesy shown, and reflected on American annexation, noting the Philippine plan of government could be good but questioning why a distant nation should seek to colonize a people who have long fought Spain for equal rights.

Remains Brought Home From the Philippines

The remains of 18 soldiers who died in the Philippines have landed aboard the Sheridan and will be buried where relatives desire. The list includes Col. Brotsenberg of the First Nebraska who died of a gunshot wound and others from Oregon, Montana, Wyoming, California, and Missouri, with causes such as typhoid fever, typhus, pneumonia, paralysis, and morphine poisoning.

Samoan Commission Arrives in Apia for Sitting

In Apia Samoa on May 16 the Samoan commission arrived for sittings. Members include Bartlett Tripp former US minister to Austria Hungary Baron Speck Von Sternberg representing Germany and C H Eliot of the British embassy. A message from Rear Admiral Kautz notes Badger arrived May 13 and Philadelphia may depart to reach San Francisco by June 25.

Paris Not Floated Off Coverack in Cornwall

The Paris attempted to float at 8 this morning with no success. The steamer’s position remains unchanged and conditions are less favorable. Another flotation attempt is planned this afternoon with the holds pumped dry and the two afterholds filled to tilt the vessel. a moderate wind is blowing.

Town Fire Destroys Dozens of Buildings in Saint John

A serious blaze in the Indian town district of Saint John New Brunswick began at noon and by 1 pm about thirty wooden structures had burned. Firefighters, including all city apparatus, battled the flames but officials reported the fire not under control at that hour.

Bicycle Trust A Failure Emerges In New York

In New York on May 25 the Herald reports growing dissensions in the bicycle trust. Many manufacturers faced options on their plants by A. G. Spaulding due June 1, with August 1 extensions resisted. Former ally R. T. Coleman leads renewed opposition, threatening to fracture the trust. Coleman reportedly remains out, refusing to renew his option while Spaulding and Coleman reportedly conferred at the Waldorf Astoria.

Japanese Loan in London Planned for 10 Million Sterling

A Japanese loan of 10,000,000 pounds sterling is reported to be issued next week in London at 4 percent interest. Banks involved include Purss Bank Mentread Yokohama Specie Bank Hong Ki Shanghai Banking and the Chartered Bank of India. The entire loan is underwritten in London.

Butte federal building site bids opened by federal commission

A federal commission arrived in Butte to select a site for the new federal building. Fourteen bids were publicized including Barrett, Shelly Tuttle, Bartlett, Moule, Thornton, Maloney, Louisa Benjamin, and W. McC. White among others. The panel will review bids, possible adjustments, and finalize a site decision to be sent to the Treasury. The building is planned for about 10,000 square feet with basement, two stories, attic, housing court, post office, and internal revenue offices.

Irishmen Pass Resolutio Aimed at British Rule

In New York Fernando's hall more than 60 Irish societies and about 160 delegates including three women gathered to celebrate Queen Victoria's birthday. A protest against the British monarchy emerged with calls to overthrow British dominion while affirming American citizenship. A priest praised Irish resistance, and resolutions condemned coercion, urging U.S. opposition to monarchical ties and colonial policy. Copies will be sent to McKinley and other officials.

Arrangements Set to Deport Five Japanese and Chinese Patients

Stockton California May 2 Arrangements by the state commission of lunacy to remove five Japanese and about six Chinese patients from the Stockton hospital for the insane to their native countries. Negotiations with Japan and China governments have succeeded with both agreeing to take the afflicted residents back. Japanese slated for June 2 and Chinese for July. The plan extends to all state hospitals.

Bonheur Ill. Senate Passes Franchise Tax Bill. Notables Recall

Telegraphic briefs report Rosa Bonheur gravely ill in Fontainebleau with lung congestion. Albany notes the franchise tax bill passed the senate 40 to 18 with three Democratic senators joining Republicans. Madrid reports the death of Senor Dov Casilar, a respected Republican orator. Washington says General Guy V. Henry, recently superseded as Porto Rico governor general, urged the president to support the island and forecast a prosperous future for its people.
