Strikers Injunctions Questioned by Social Reform Club

New York May 23 The Social Reform club examined injunctions against the clearmakers union over picketing factories with struck employees and forbidding strike benefits. The committee urged state and national action to limit injunctions to parties only, void them if they block highway use or free speech, grant jury trials on disobedience, and critiqued Justice Freedman’s injunction against the clearmakers as likely to be set aside.

Withdrawal of Deposits from National Bank Depositories

Washington May 23 Secretary of the Treasury Gage issued letters directing depositories to transfer funds by June 5 to the assistant treasurer for credit to the US treasury as part of moving 5,000,000 from temporary balances to the sub-treasury. The transfers support redemption of 25,364,500 in funded loan bonds at 2 percent called by a June 18 circular. Bondholders may present bonds before August 19 for payment. interest ends then.

Broken lamp causes fatal mine explosion in North Carolina

In Chatham county near Cum nock coal mines twenty two workers died in an explosion likely from a broken gauze in a safety lamp. About 40 to 50 men were underground. five survived in the east heading while others in other sections perished.
