Filipinos Object to Government Plan in Manila Meeting

Filipino commissioners spent a day with American counterparts reviewing the proposed government and peace plan. They sought guarantees of personal rights and school system details, supported separation of church and state, and said they were pleased in principle but could not officially endorse the scheme.

Dewey Sails to Hong Kong Aboard Olympia

The cruiser Olympia carrying Dewey arrived from Manila and was saluted by ships of many nations. Dewey, Captain Lamberton, Lt. Brumby and Consul Wildman met Hong Kong officials including Sir Henry Blake and Commodore Powell. Dewey is ill and unable to attend the queen's birthday celebration. Olympia will dock for ten days.

Washington Promotes Summers and Case by Brevet

Manila May 23 reports General Otis recommending Colonel Owen Summers to be brigadier general of volunteers by brevet for gallantry at Massan Bulac bridge and San Isidoro. Captain J. S. Case named major of volunteers by brevet for distinguished services. Summers led the advance brigade of Lawton's division toward San Isidoro as division engineer.

Remarkable court martial ends with acquittal for Captain Jeffrey

New York May 23 special from Washington reports Captain Jones B. Jeffrey assistant quartermaster of volunteers was tried at Manila on charges of quitting his post and pilfering valuables worth about 600 dollars and conduct unbecoming an officer. He was found not guilty though details of acquittal are unreleased Captain Jeffrey is a Canadian native who joined from Illinois in 1898.

Colored Men Speak On Negro Problem In Chicago Banquet

At the Congregational club banquet in the Palmer house representatives of the colored race and white brethren discussed the negro problem in the south. Speakers included Rev. L. B. Maxwell of Savannah and Prof. R. W. Taylor of Tuskegee University. Mrs Ida Wells Barnett also attended.

Yukon Railway to Dawson Route Could Cut Travel Time

Ex mine owner R P Elliott returns from the Klondike praising the Yukon and White Pass railway. He says trains may run Skagway to Bennett by July 4, enabling steamer connections to White Horse Rapids and Dawson in ten to twelve days. Paris Will Be Floated After Wreck Off Lowland Point

Salvage tugs from Liverpool expected to reach Falmouth to refloat the steamer Paris after she ran on the rocks near Lowland Point. Passengers mostly embarked on trains to New York aboard the Bt. Paul while pumps and divers tackle the damaged holds. The fifth hold is badly pierced and pumping cannot clear it, but remaining holds are secure and officials give little explanation for the mishap.

Bishop Whipple Sees England’s Common Mission

New York May 2 Right Rev Benjamin Whipple Episcopal bishop of Minnesota returning from England said the friendly spirit to America and a shared mission were notable.
