Take Zamboanga to be occupied by U S troops

Washington May 15 Gen Otis is expected to replace the Spanish garrison at Zamboanga with United States troops. Zamboanga, capital of Mindanao, a strategic island seaport, is easily defended by a small artillery force though insurgents hold rapid fire guns and may lack ammunition for sustained action.

Spanish Force Attacked at Zamboanga in Philippines

A dispatch from Manila to the Journal and Advertiser reports that on May 7 the Spanish garrison at Zamboanga led by Col. Clorizi repulsed an insurgent attack after insurgents seized ships. The Spanish governor general was seriously wounded along with Maj. Gimino and Capt. Julia. Lieut. Granadas and one soldier died or were wounded. An American merchant ship Dos Hermanos was sent to Iloilo. Capt. Cane relayed the events to Gen. Rios. The government offered transports Leon XIII and Puerto Rico for evacuation and discussed moving American troops to Zamboanga while evaluating the transports.

Will Extend Their Voyages To Northern Ports

Guatemala City reports that Pacific Steam Navigation Company and Sud American de Vapores will call at Mexican ports up to Magatlan, then reach San Francisco and Vancouver. French and Spanish vies will also come to the coast. Negotiations to transfer the Northern railroad to the American Syndicate move slowly. Gelette, Huntington engineer, arrived after soundings at Piedro Barrios and a quick recon of the proposed line to this city.

Supreme Court reverses ruling in Montana trust case

The Montana Supreme Court reversed Judge Clancy in Bryant versus Davis and First National Bank of Butte, saying the judgment on pleadings was improper and that the court erred in denying an amended answer. Valencia Arrives From Manila With 36 Discharged Soldiers
