Senator Hanna states the selection of a man for second place remains open until the convention assembles. He notes no nominee has been chosen, Roosevelt has not been discussed, and the president has not involved himself. He predicts possible ballots and emphasizes the final choice will serve the party’s best interests. Washington May 1 General Wheater reports an January expedition from Manila south to Lake Taal. Forces included the 4th 28th 45th and parts of the 3rd infantry and artillery at Imus near a mile south. On May 7 Lieutenant Ward Cheney was mortally wounded directing a detachment as insurgent forces of five hundred clashed. Casualties and skirmishes followed with American losses sustains.
General Wheaton commends officers and units in Cavite campaigns including 28th Infantry at Putol Imus and around Taal, detailing 74 insurgent dead, 11 wounded for us, and subsequent clashes near Semering and Lemery. He praises Ward Cheney, Colonel Birkhimer, Colonel Anderson, Major Taggart, Major Johnson, Major Price, Captain Howland, and Lt F P M Smith for courage and leadership.
In San Francisco May 11 The Examiner reports Mrs Nettie R Craven has been indicted by the grand jury for perjury related to her claim for a widow's share of the dames G Fair estate George W Simpton, who swore he married Fair and Craven and later amended his affidavit, is indicted for perjury Adolph Sylva is indicted for subornation of perjury others implicated and more indictments may follow

It suggests a Driebund against Germany is the real possibility in the air.
