Insurgents and Prisoners Freed After Piria Landing

Allied forces under Lieutenant Brown landed twenty marines at Piria driving insurgents away. They freed and transferred prisoners aboard the ship including ten Americans, seventy five Spanish officers, seventeen priests, twenty one merchants, four Filipinos and four Spanish soldiers with one officer’s wife. Lieutenant Gibbons praises the energy and zeal of the men amid hardships of the expedition.

Dewey Parade Honoring Admiral in St Louis

In St Louis on May 5 Admiral Dewey and Mrs Dewey were honored with a city and military parade attended by groups from across the state. The admiral later attended an informal Loyal Legion meeting before departing for Memphis. Excursion trains brought crowds while the parade formed at Washington and Grand and stretched past the exposition building as Dewey reviewed the two hour procession from the grand stand.

Spokane dispatch reports Sandon, a major Slocan mining town in British Columbia, wiped out by fire. About 1,200 residents homeless, with losses estimated between 600,000 and 1,000,000. insurance around 28,000.
