Foreigners urged as professors in Havana universities

Havana reports say The Tuba recommends hiring foreigners for professorships at the University of Havana and Cuba’s engineering college, arguing Cubans are not sufficiently prepared. Three Die in New York City Fires and Explosions

Four people killed and a fifth gravely hurt in last nights fires across New York. At South Street lodging house John Curran marine engineer perished and Fireman Daniel Mullin died after a ladder accident. Fireman James Fitzpatrick fatally injured when a hose truck overturned. An explosion at Joseph Stein & Co fat and tallow factory on West Fortieth Street buried two men, Thomas McGuire and Joseph Drum, as rescuers toiled all night hoping to recover them.

Relief and Pension Plan For Chicago Milwaukee & St Paul Rr

The Chicago Milwaukee and St Paul Railroad will submit an elaborate relief and pension plan to its employees in June. The plan mirrors the Baltimore and Ohio relief and Pennsylvania pension features with installments from workers and a yearly company treasury contribution to form a fixed annual fund. After a set service period workers may retire on a pension at age sixty, with a maximum service age seventy. Pensions will be based on final earnings and the relief fund aiding workers disabled by illness accident or other causes. The relief committee will be three managers plus an advisory board of three employee reps. initially appointed by the president, later elected by employees. Length of service required for retirement is undecided. Between 1,000 and 24,000 employees will be affected.

St Louis Welcomes Dewey After Long Journey

San Francisco May 4 The steamer Coptic from the Orient via Honolulu is in quarantine. After leaving Honolulu last Friday with no new plague cases for two days the Honolulu board of health planned to raise the port quarantine last Monday if no new cases appeared.

Evaded Customs Laws Involves Parisian Dealer Vases

New York May 4 Two china vases valued at 40 000 dollars, belonging to M. de Malherbe of Paris, were seized by customs officers on the Prench line pier for alleged evasion of the customs law. Authorities learned of the import from China via Vancouver and Quebec. Malherbe admitted delivering the vases from China and was about to sail for France.

Will Act Together In Rates Against Suez Canal

San Francisco May 4 Oriental transfer agents from Pacific steamship companies agreed to act jointly to set rates against the Suez Canal. Agents in China and Japan will coordinate to raise or lower rates only as needed to secure business. Incoming cargo agreements are not yet settled.

Hearing in Goebel Case resumes in Frankfort

In Frankfort on May 4, the Goebel assassination hearing for W. H. Culton resumed with Capt J. F. Howe testifying that Caleb and Jon Power sought to have his Barbourville company march to Frankfort disguised as citizens. No corpses recovered today in Scofield mine disaster

Scofield Utah May 4 A Deseret News report says by noon today no new bodies were brought out since last night but more are expected from No 4 shaft. Total recovered is 224 with many still trapped under rock in the Ferris level. Rescue efforts continue as funerals are planned and volunteers aid the doomed mining community.
