Chicago May 2 Robert Wayne a young telonant with a stock company was forced to perform his role in Dewey the Hero of Manila as his wife lay dying after a serious operation. With no understudy he steadied his voice to finish the act while knowing she likely would die the next morning. Her death came at 4 a m four hours after his hospital departure. Mrs Wayne once played Norah wife Poppea in Quo Vadis.
May 2 Manila dispatch reports 30 men of the Forty third regiment attacked by rebels on Calubig island Samar. Twenty Americans killed and the rest rescued. In Kentucky, Judge Farrill orders venue change to Scott county for Powers Davis and others charged in the Goebel murder case.
Velena May Kerrigan Edward Kerrigan and Henry Lives pleaded guilty to burglary in connection with a Pitts lake theft case. They were transported from Pall Lake to be tried, with Frank Hingham and others as witnesses. Smith sentenced Kerrigan to one year in prison and Lewis to four years and months on the charge.
London reports continuing British operations around the Transvaal border with Hoes and Abanda as General Botha reinforces at Bloemfontein and Kimberley. Dispatches describe artillery bombardment near Fort Abrahanes, a Cavalry advance toward Houtnek, and a stern Boer defense while Queen Victoria’s family observes the conflict from home.
The report recalls a Dewey celebration in Chicago on May 2 with a large civic gathering. Admiral Dewey and the Dewey orlebvian group visited Lockpert, toured a dam project, and the party then proceeded by yacht to Bones for a city luncheon hosted by Mrs. Bryan Lathrop. Mrs. Dewey attended the luncheon in the afternoon.
