Negro Soldiers Shot in Coeur d'Alene Saloon
In Rathdrum Idaho on March 19 two colored soldiers Hayes and Hayden were shot at Pheifer's saloon in Coeur d'Alene. Hayes was hit through the lung and will die. Washington March 19 The Coeur d Alene inquiry was resumed today by the house committee on military affairs with Jay Forney special prosecutor at the scene of disorder, Hay of Virginia directing the examination to reveal how far US troops were under Governor Steunenberg and his executive office in Idaho. The witness said General Merriam was not the responsible commander as the governor and Sinclair directed affairs. Furney said troops were sent to aid suppressing the insurrection by cooperation and delaying the state officials. Hay asserted the president had no authority to place troops under state control. Sinclair was a civil official who exercised military authority to enforce his civil power.
