Special to the Inter Mountain Helena March 19 County Attorney McConnell filed in district court an Information against E B Kellogg charging murder in the second degree in producing by illegal operation the death of Mrs Sophia Hrella of East Helena. Kellogg was arrested and arraigned. bonds set at 1000. he will plead Friday. He denies the charge claiming he treated the woman for pleuro pneumonia and that the operation may have been done by another. The dispatch also notes multiple Supreme Court decisions on unrelated matters including appeals by Butte Water Co and costs in contempt cases.

Negro Soldiers Shot in Coeur d'Alene Saloon

In Rathdrum Idaho on March 19 two colored soldiers Hayes and Hayden were shot at Pheifer's saloon in Coeur d'Alene. Hayes was hit through the lung and will die. Hayden was shot through the breast into the heart. The bullet is unrecovered. After the shooting both men walked to the garrison about half a mile away. The shooter is at large.

New Orleans Remains On Asiatic Station

A Washington dispatch says Secretary Long questions a report of extensive repairs needed for the protected cruiser New Orleans at Nagasaki. The ship’s officers claimed two months of boiler work, but a naval board said two weeks sufficed. The Navy plans to keep the ship on the Asiatic station despite officers favoring the North Atlantic. John Wesley Van Hrocklin a German who attempted suicide by cutting his throat last night died today from shock and complications of other diseases after suffering great pain.

Investigation resumed by committee on military affairs Washington

Washington March 19 The Coeur d Alene inquiry was resumed today by the house committee on military affairs with Jay Forney special prosecutor at the scene of disorder, Hay of Virginia directing the examination to reveal how far US troops were under Governor Steunenberg and his executive office in Idaho. The witness said General Merriam was not the responsible commander as the governor and Sinclair directed affairs. Furney said troops were sent to aid suppressing the insurrection by cooperation and delaying the state officials. Hay asserted the president had no authority to place troops under state control. Sinclair was a civil official who exercised military authority to enforce his civil power.
