Fire Sweeps Windsor Hotel During St Patrick Parade

Flames from a burning lace curtain swept the Windsor Hotel on Forty-seventh Street and Fifth Avenue in New York as the St Patrick’s Day parade passed. Within minutes the blaze spread to the roof and interiors, trapping hundreds. Officials fear 10 to 15 lives were lost with dozens injured while guests and staff scrambled down stairs and from windows. Firemen arrived rapidly and struck multiple alarms as the building collapsed and crews worked to recover victims.

Fifth Avenue Fire Traps Workers as Smoke Swallows Street

A woman from San Francisco residing at Mrs A P Adams, 19 West Forty-sixth Street, suffered broken legs and a broken breast bone after a hotel incident. Thomas P Ochiltree escaped unharmed but lost valuable pictures in a smoke filled scene. Dense smoke along Fifth Avenue nearly suffocated pedestrians attempting to cross.

March 18 reports from hospitals show several patients improving or not serious. At Roosevelt Hospital Mrs Islen Brewer and M Catherine Bailey of Chicago are serious, Mrs Louis Wallace not serious. Bellevue lists Alice Price improving, Kate Roach recovering, others doubtful. Presbyterian notes Adelaide Wheeler and Miss Von Spiegele improving. Wheeler improving, Miss Misch improving. New York Hospital lists William Love improving and Ellen Curran not dangerous.

Fire disaster prompts Windsor hotel fire safety talk

New York March 18 Building Inspector Bunnell found no violation of building laws in the Windsor hotel but blamed lack of fireproofing and swift flames. He noted missing front exits and that red lights or exit diagrams are often ignored. Fire Chief Bonner admitted a 15 minute alarm delay and said stairs were hard to find as elevators were in use.

Heroic guest defies fire to rescue family at Windsor

Edward P. Wells of Jamestown North Dakota, his wife, and daughter faced a deadly Windsor hotel blaze on Fifth Avenue during the St Patrick parade. Wells prepared a fire escape rope, lowered his daughter to safety, then ascended and descended to rescue his wife and finally himself. Firemen aided the family at ground level and Wells received thanks as he sought shelter with friends.

Fire at Windsor Hotel Leaves Unidentified Woman Dead

In New York on March 18 Dr. Pitkin, Windsor hotel physician, accounted for six bed-ridden patients except Mrs James P Stokes who is feared dead. Twelve girls studied dancing in a fourth floor parlor when the fire began. Mrs Dora Gray Duncan of San Francisco led children to safety with her two daughters among the first to evacuate. An unidentified woman around 30 died minutes after the outbreak.

New York March 18 The revised list of Windsor Hotel fire victims names 14 dead and 15 possibly dead. 40 still missing and 52 injured whereabout known. Fire engines and 100 policemen remained at night as walls threatened to fall. No firemen missing per Chief Bonner. Contractors to deploy 1000 workers to clear ruins. Names include John Connolly and Mrs Adolf Gibson with several unidentified victims.

The navy department has been advised of the arrival at Manila of the battleship Oregon. The batteries ordered out to Manila are Battery E First artillery at Jefferson Barracks Missouri Battery F Fourth artillery at Fort Adams and Battery F Fifth artillery at Fort Hamilton.

New York March 18 The Tribune reports Gen Alger secretary of war plans a Cuba and Porto Rico inspection trip next week. The Ingalls will carry him from Savannah, leaving Washington after public notice. transport details and ship fittings are being finalized amid publicity and scrutiny. The voyage aims for a discreet departure with a 30 day provisioning but actual itinerary remains unsettled.

Army in Manila reorganized into two divisions

Manila March 18 report that the entire American force in Manila has been reorganized into two divisions of three brigades each. Gen Lawton assumes command of the first division with volunteers from Washington North Dakota California and others. Gen MacArthur commands the second division with volunteers and regulars. A separate provost guard brigade is assigned. An attack on Lonachurch yesterday by rebels was repulsed by Pennsylvania troops with casualties. Lieut. Thompson and Privates McVay and McCanse wounded. A gunboat with Twenty-third regulars fights on the lake near Morong and Santa Cruz.
