In a Mining Camp a World of Odd Careers
Bernard Thariton in the Boston Transcript recalls a mining camp near Rangoon and the Guinea coast where veterans and wanderers mingle. He notes a former naval midshipman, Annapolis graduate, soldiers from the Philippines, Gordon Highlanders’ waiter, a Franco Prussian war veteran, a Cuban veteran who was also a jockey, and a musician who once played in a major London orchestra. The camp, though rough, is a remarkable cross section of lives and stories.
