Copper Ore Falls Short of Profit for Highland Boy Mine
The report finds an immense vein with 2 to 7 percent copper but says extraction is uneconomical. Ore cannot be concentrated and must be smelted directly, making lower grades unprofitable. Compared with Anaconda, Highland Boy smelting costs three tons $12 versus $5.50. Experts estimate 1,000,000 tons above 600 feet at hs percent copper and 8.8 cents per pound production. An editorial predicts copper values will decline toward 50 to 60 per ton, reducing mine profits by at least 25 percent.
