Lieutenant General John M. Schofield, in a World dispatch from St. Augustine, criticizes the Boers for choosing a retreat path. He argues their line should have shifted via Boshof to Brandfort or Winberg to join northern forces, instead of an attempted cross in front of British forces toward Bloemfontein. Bloemfontein, he says, is a weak position and could be invested by Lord Roberts with less risk, keeping Cronje from reaching it by a circuited route.

London dispatch reports General Clements learned Colesberg evacuated. He sent a force to occupy Colesberg Junction and rode into Colesberg where he was welcomed. He seized ammunition arrested rebels and left for Rensberg. The railway line is clear and Chap Lanewelewan's aid continues. Colesberg and Colesberg Junction are held by our troops.

British forces move toward Nelthorpe after Ladysmith entry

General Dundonald with Natal carbineers and a composite regiment entered Ladysmith last night. The area between Dundonald and Ladysmith is reported clear of the enemy as he advances toward Nelthorpe. The War Office released the dispatch from General Buller at Lyttleton headquarters.
