Chaffee Departs for China to Lead Troops

General Chaffee, ordered to command U S troops in China, left Washington at 10 40 pm for San Francisco with aide Lieutenant Harper. He is due in San Francisco Sunday morning and sails for Nagasaki aboard the Grant with the 6th Cavalry the same day.

German Consul Confirms Seymour Message Details

Berlin reports the German consul in Che Foo verifies Vice Admiral Seymour's message. It says Seymour was eight miles west of Tien Tsin, harassed and able to hold out two more days with 60 killed and over 200 wounded. He sought a relief column of 4000 men. The column departed Tien Tsin on June 25 under Russian command.

Chinese minister reports on Beijing security dispatch

Washington June 27 Chinese minister Oia Morning called on the secretary and relayed a dispatch from the Tsung Li Yamen at Peli dated the 19th. It said imperial guard entry was permitted then reinforced, which the Chinese government would not allow. The dispatch also claimed the consul general at Tien Tsin demanded surrender of the Taku forts and that foreign ministers would soon depart Beijing for Thea Tain with their guards.
