Government sues Boston trust firm over bonds in equity

A United States bill in equity filed in a circuit court by John W. Cowan seeks recovery of up to 570,000 dollars held by the American Loan and Trust Company of Boston. The government asserts the trust company is trustee for the Union Pacific Railway under an 1886 agreement and that the railroad owes about 6.58 million dollars as of February 16, 1896.

Eagle Hotel Fire Claims Life In Oswego Blaze

A morning fire destroyed the Eagle hotel in Oswego New York. Mrs Rachel King of New Haven died by suffocation and eight others were seriously injured. The blaze began in the city den and spread rapidly, forcing several people including the proprietor to jump from second story windows.

Miners and Negroes in Gunfire at Sunnyside Mine

In Evansville Indiana on June 21 unknown shooters fired near the Sunnyside mine as 30 Kentucky Negro miners arrived for work. Six union men wounded and several Black workers hit as the scene sparked a stampede. The mine is closed and authorities monitor threats of further violence. Local officials and national UMW leaders deny involvement and Governor Mount may intervene.

Elk parade lights up city as 8000 Elks march

The registration chair estimates about 8,000 Elks are in the city for the event. The warm weather did not dampen turnout as thousands of spectators lined the parade route. Buildings along the line were decorated and lodge members from several cities marched past amid cheers.
