Wiped Out at Herman Nebraska After Huge Tornado

An Omaha Bee report from Blair Nebraska describes a tornado that destroyed the town of Herman Nebraska 11 miles north. Two funnel clouds converged and the town was leveled trapping residents as trains ferried relief. About 88 people were aboard Train No 2 with many killed or wounded and relief crews rushing medical aid to Blair and Herman. The storm razed nearly all buildings except a few on the outskirts and left the town a debris field with a large water tank miraculously intact.

Tornado Death Toll in Herman Nebraska Reported

Relief crews in Omaha compiled a list of the dead from the Herman tornado last night. Names include A. B. Hopkins and his family, W. B. Richards the postmaster, Mr. Hawkins, child of M. Davis, Louis Clausen, and Thomas Hines.

Tornado Ruins in New Richmond Halted as Rain Delays Search

After a June twister in New Richmond Wisconsin no bodies were recovered last night due to heavy rain and worker exhaustion. No formal recovery operation or supply distribution has begun yet though military patrols guard the town center. Estimates of the missing range from 50 to 100 as authorities await better conditions.

The Death List. Ten killed and about 26 injured in last night's tornado in Herman Nebraska. It is thought all are now accounted for unless the storm has been more disastrous in the country than anticipated. Not a single building in the town is left whole.

Karl Hanchette a Butter Factory employee shot and killed his wife in Los Angeles and then tried to kill himself. He is son of H J Hanchette a well known local newspaperman who disappeared from Chicago years ago and has not been heard of since.

Troops Drive Enemy From Zapote River Area

Havemeyer Attacks Tariff in Sugar Trust Hearing

Washington June 14 Henry C Havemeyer president of the American Sugar Refining Co testified to the industrial commission on trusts focusing on the sugar industry. He denounced tariffs as the mother of all fate and argued a 10 percent tariff is high. He claimed U S sugar policy favors Louisiana cane growers and beet sugar makers costing the public about 24 million dollars annually. He said the company is under shareholder pressure and could be sold for three times its capitalization, with refining capacity around 45 000 barrels daily and output about 30 000. He noted about 11 000 stockholders and urged free Cuban sugar to lower refined sugar prices. He stated his intent to stay in the caffe business.

Wrecked steamer Rosene reaches quarantine port

Reports say the steamer Rosene of the Merritad Chapman Wrecking Co arrived in quarantine early today after line incidents at sea. Captain Ruffall and several crew are noted missing, with partial survivors and a sinking vessel nearby.
