Oregon Volunteers Return in Spectacular San Francisco Welcome
San Francisco greeted the Oregon volunteers and California signal corps with a deafening, carnivallike procession. Cannons, steam whistles, bells, and cheers accompanied the regiments as they arrived from the Philippines after 14 months of hardship and battle. The march went past the Palace Hotel and finished at the Presidio where the troops rested before mustering out and returning home to Oregon.
