Johannesburg Defenses Viewed as Impregnable Forts
Samuel Stockton, visiting from Johannesburg, argues at the Waldorf-Astoria that Johannesburg’s defense rests on vast mine tailings forming natural forts. He claims these tailings, with cannons on top, create formidable barriers that would hinder British penetration, though he notes they cannot be battered down. The scene reflects wartime anxieties and strategic speculation.
