Stubborn Resistance at Spearman's Camp

On January 22 at 9 20 am General Warren launched a left flank movement against Boer positions near Tabamyama mountain and Spienkop. British artillery engaged Boer rock fortifications while infantry advanced over ridges, but Boers held fast with heavy musketry and few guns. Captain Henley of the Dublin Fusiliers was mortally wounded leading a thrust to seize a new vantage point.

Washington January 22. Senate committee investigating Clark's election heard Faulkner say Ector letters not yet received. President Smith of Montana National Bank testified Clark deposited a $50 000 personal check but never drew on it. P W Murray testified Gallick solicited his vote for Clark and George Casey offered to buy mining properties for a Clark vote. Prosecution ended witnesses and adjourned until tomorrow.

Work of the Senate Ends Mixed With North Carolina Debate

In Washington the Senate saw Platt push a joint resolution to urge Britain to join an international commission on waters forming the U S and Canadian boundary. Daly suffers broken ribs after sidewalk fall in New York

Special to the Inter Mountain reports Marcos Daly was injured when he slipped on a New York sidewalk in front of the Netherland hotel. He fell against the railing, rode to his carriage, then felt pain on return. Doctors say two ribs are broken and a third injured. Daly remains in no danger and his gland show no delay.

Pepo Will Hang for 1898 Murder Conviction Upheld

The Montana supreme court denied a new trial for William Pepo, convicted in Teton County last June of the Julius Plath murder on June 28, 1898, and sentenced to hang. Plath's body was found in an abandoned Muddy River cabin near Great Falls after Pepo was captured in Washington and returned for trial. The court said the verdict was sustained by the evidence, largely circumstantial.
