The Boers’ railroad ran from Colenso to Elwan. British forces found large ammunition stocks and provisions left by the enemy. Further resistance is expected to be half hearted, with Ladysmith likely to be reached in a few days.

Foresters in Brooklyn switch to American order

At a February meeting Court Unique Ancient Order of Foresters in Brooklyn withdrew from the British order and joined the Foresters of America. The Boer flag was greeted with applause as 144 members, who refused a raised per capita tax, were suspended. An admission to the American order was granted and a Dutch Red Cross fund box noted inside the hall.

Idaho Labor Troubles Hearings Open In Washington

Washington February 22. The house committee on military affairs resumed the Idaho labor troubles inquiry. Chairman Hull noted Governor Steunenberg opposed the procedure, saying it placed state officials on trial. Steunenberg was asked for a personal statement while Lentz and Hay protested. An affidavit attempt was refused and Balch may be called later. Adjournment followed with plans for afternoon sessions.

Shoshone Chief Wakes Died At Wind River

W shakie chief of the Shoshone Indians died in his tepee on the Wind River Reservation in central Wyoming last evening after months of illness. He was 93 and led the tribe for 53 years. He was known as a friend to white settlers and aided early westward settlement. A devout Christian, his examples raised the Shoshones to a higher standard of intelligence.
