Secret US Liberia mission shadows naval probes
A Washington dispatch reports that the cruiser Montgomery conducted a covert voyage to Liberia Africa amid secrecy at the Navy Department. The voyage, possibly to display the American flag and scout a potential Liberian coaling station, followed readings that British German and Italian powers eyed Liberia. Secretary Long confirmed the ship visited Monrovia and Freetown, with Commander Merrill meeting Liberia’s president. Secret aims were tied to Liberia’s desire for an American protectorate and a coaling site, while official stance affirmed no change in policy protecting Liberia’s integrity. Details of movements remain tentative, with various ports cited and questions raised in the Senate by Senator Mason about the mission’s purpose.

Maine Heroes Buried at Arlington in Simple Rites
Washington December 28 The remains of 180 victims of the Maine disaster brought from Havana by the battleship Texas were buried today with full military honors on a hill at Arlington Cemetery. President McKinley and the cabinet, Admiral Dewey, Major General Miles, and other officers attended. Silent Commander Wainwright and Lieut. Bowers, who were aboard the Maine, were present. Soldiers, marines, and a naval detachment lined the hill as wreaths were placed on the caskets. The ceremony, under Chaplain Clarke and Father Chadwick, lasted about twenty minutes in the snow and cold with a three volley salute and bugle calls.
