His best known invention is the open Lop hand lantern used in railway signaling. Born in Cornwall England in 1831, he moved to the United States in 1844 and later became chief machinist for the Milwaukee and Lake Shore railroad in 1867. He formed a partnership in 1861 for railway supplies. the business burned in the Great Fire of 1871.
