Death in Powder Shaft Tragedy in Walkerville
Thornton is killed instantly when giant powder explodes in a small frame building behind a shaft near Park and Arizona streets. The blast rips the structure apart as his son Eugene, age 16, digs out his father's mangled body. Thornton, a miner and former Civil War sailor, had faced earlier close calls at the site and was known for strong opinions on powder handling. The coroner will hold an inquest at Sherman’s Undertaking.
