A Soldier's Christmas Eve Escape From Andersonville
In 1864 at Andersonville a dozen prisoners, guarded outside, attempted a breakout amid cold rain. Four men fled, endured hunger and danger, and two weeks later Sergeant Carter reached Union lines near Tennessee. A Southern woman, initially hostile, secretly aided him, cared for his wounds, and escorted him toward freedom on Christmas Eve. She ultimately chose forgiveness, sending him toward Union troops as Christmas Eve silence fell.
