London reports a major engagement as General Methuen's forces assault a strong Boer kopje. Despite artillery and Highlander attacks, the defenders held positions with heavy British losses and uncertainty over the outcome. Gatacre and Buller movements loom as stocks react to the setback.
A Freve camp dispatch dated Tuesday morning reports a brigade of English Scottish Irish and Welsh forces under General Barton with naval guns advancing to a strong position three miles from Culenso where they met no opposition.
A dispatch from Capetown reports Major General Ane Area Wauchope was killed at Modder River on Monday. Wauchope, veteran of the Ashanti and Egyptian campaigns, led troops in the field and paid the supreme price in action.
