The North German Lloyd steamer Frederick der Grosse arrived from Bremen and Cherbourg after a very stormy crossing. Heavy westerly gales and high seas hindered progress, the wind reaching hurricane force between longitudes 3 and 67. Three steerage children were fired aboard. The ship carried 172 cabin and 1,721 steerage passengers.
