Rennes Aug 31 The Dreyfus court martial met behind closed doors to discuss secret artillery bordereau documents. They were escorted by California volunteers while governors rode lead columns, wreaths adorned khaki uniforms, and crowds cheered from buildings as bombs burst overhead.

Volunteers Returning From Manila Transport Sailings

Washington dispatch reports the transport Para sailed today from Manila with fourteen officers forty one enlisted and nine hundred twenty four discharged men and six civilians. Otis notes the ships Tartar Pennsylvania Newport News and Ohio sail dates and lists the remaining state volunteers in order they left San Francisco for Manila. The War Department plans to return troops in the sailing order, with Washington Kansas Third Tennessee first five other states following as shown.

Americans Battle Natives in Hills Near Manila

Dispatches from Gehu report Colonel Bayless led US troops into the hills against a troublesome native band that ambushed four soldiers. The Americans found entrenched foes, drove them from trenches, and suffered no casualties though heat prostrations occurred. The cruiser Charleston landed guards in the city during troop absence.
