Militant Missionary Defies Boxers Near Tien Tsin

A Lazarist missionary Father De Hets arrived in New York via Shanghai reporting he defended a village forty miles northwest with six thousand converts for six weeks against twenty thousand Boxers armed with rifles and swords. Officials demanded departure but he stayed with few rifles and a small cannon until General Sung intervened. The Christians were to be spared if disarmed and De Hets left for the coast. He was escorted to General Ma at Pei Tsang, then three days later Pei Tsang fell while remaining converts received one week of food under Pekin orders from General Bung.
