Birds that are architects in South Africa
The large grosbecks of South Africa live in vast colonies. They choose a tall tree and spread a grass roof to form a communal dwelling. The roof keeps heat and rain away and 40 to 500 pairs share the shelter. Dwellings are built in regular streets resembling rows of tenement houses.
