Rich Find at Copper River Placer Mine
Seattle reports a fabulously rich placer gold strike on Slate creek, Copper river district. Four men reportedly took 32 ounces of coarse gold in one day from seven feet depth, with eight pounds in the first week. The strike, dated July 7, caused a stampede and involves owners Joseph Burke, J Jacobson, William Clarey, and Robert Cole. A headwater find near the Chisana yields about 30 cents per pan. The 240 mile inland district has up to 80 miners, connected by telegraph to Port Valdez, as Justice Harrington manages district duties from his army post.
