U P Strike Over Watch Order Ends Quietly
The threatened Union Pacific strike over the new watch order did not materialize as modifications were made. Workers with reliable watches are not required to buy new timepieces, while new hires and those with untrustworthy watches must obtain company-specified watches. The dispute as seen by railroaders was aimed at a compelled purchase, but the adjusted order eliminates some objections.
