President McKinley Leaves Washington On 10000 Mile Westward Tour

President and Mrs McKinley began a ten thousand mile journey from Washington aboard a decorated Southern railway train. Crowds cheered as the Olympia coach carried the couple and party from Union Station at scheduled time. Mrs McKinley waved to admirers while President McKinley stood with hat in hand on the rear platform as the train rolled toward the open country.

Independence and Annexation Deliberations in Cuba

Kitchener Leads Raid Against Boer Forces Near Pietersburg

London reports Lord Kitchener’s forces surprised and captured the Boers at Klipdam, with seven killed and thirty-seven captured. Eight thousand rounds of ammunition and wagons, oxen, horses, and mules were seized. Casualties were one wounded on our side. Other columns claim dozens of Boer deaths and numerous captures, while raiders near Wepener claim five killed. A Capetown report notes Boers blew up a railroad between Graspan and Belmont to intercept Rhodes, causing limited damage.
