Murderer Executed at San Quentin in California
Joaquin Balabe, an Oakland murderer, was hanged at San Quentin. He killed Charles B. Gates in Oakland on March 27, 1898. Gates was an aged cripple and a vendor. Balabe robbed the corpse of a watch and $24 after the crime. He had been twice reprieved before the sentence was affirmed by the state supreme court.
