Five carpenters at work in a building were unaccounted for after a blaze or collapse. Nearly all the imprisoned workers escaped with minor injuries, and only one of the five carpenters has been identified so far.

London April 3. Correspondent reports from Osfonthein March 7 during General Cronje’s siege describe brutal rifle fire from entrenchments. In the Paardeburg action a unit of Kitchener’s horse rode to an Osfonthein farm, learned of local troops nearby, then opened fire as Boers were said to be advancing.
Mr Bennett Burleigh writes from March 6 noting the Boers fortify their front across kopjes and hills along the Modder with trenches walls sandbag redoubts and hidden guns. He describes outposts and daily clashes as cavalry skirmishes occur between Boer and British forces.
A British officer led a thin squadron to within 300 yards of retreating Boers, firing rapidly and emptying saddles as the Boers halted to tend the wounded. The scene reveals vivid battlefield leadership amid hunger and harsh veldt conditions affecting both soldiers and animals.
