Mataafa War At Samoa Leaves Many Dead In Ambush

Reports from Apia detail heavy fighting as Mataafa forces clash with British and American troops and local allies. Officers Captain Stuart Kauntz and Lt. Lansdale are noted among casualties, with rebels suffering significant losses and many bodies found headless along a road near Mullin.

An expedition led by Lieut A H Freeman of Taranga and Lieut P L Lansdale with Ensign J R Monaghan of Philadelphia was ambushed by Tadamatia warriors. Two British and two American sailors were killed, with two officers dying in retreat. The German plantation manager is detained aboard Taranga. About 800 attackers were involved.
