Reports from Apia detail heavy fighting as Mataafa forces clash with British and American troops and local allies. Officers Captain Stuart Kauntz and Lt. Lansdale are noted among casualties, with rebels suffering significant losses and many bodies found headless along a road near Mullin.
An expedition led by Lieut A H Freeman of Taranga and Lieut P L Lansdale with Ensign J R Monaghan of Philadelphia was ambushed by Tadamatia warriors. Two British and two American sailors were killed, with two officers dying in retreat. The German plantation manager is detained aboard Taranga. About 800 attackers were involved.
Washington April 12 dispatch states that on April 1 a mixed US and British force under Lieut Freeman was ambushed while entering Apla. Lieut Philip B. Linsdale Ensign John Monaghan Coxswain James Butler Ordinary Seaman Norman Edsall and five others aboard the Philadelphia were wounded or killed. Two British sailors were killed and Lieut Freeman is missing.

New York April 12 A Morald from Washington reports that the Berlin treaty signatories agree on Samoan commission instructions. The administration will keep a strong American force at Apia including coal ships Bratis and Scandia plus Abarenda as guard ship. Commission to sail April 19 from San Francisco to Apia to oversee island government during future stay.
Philadelphia April 1 Mr Quay and his son Richard arrived minutes before court opened. Judge Riddle spoke as Attorney Rothermel challenged the Beaks of the bank deposit case. Prosecution relied on circumstantial evidence to prove criminal charges connected to loans and interest practices. The defense disputed admissibility of some records and the case turns on the book kept by Haywood and others. Separately a fire in Vietor Creek, Colorado, began near a business area, with firefighters mobilized as the blaze spread toward the town.
Secretary Trennan of the elite reception committee Wieh leads preparations for a May 2 military celebration in Kingston to honor the queen's birthday. About a thousand militiamen expected to participate alongside notable guests including Governor Roosevelt of New York and staff.

Mayor Maybury welcomed the group, followed by Robert Miller of Michigan Central. President P C Cass of Monett Missouri delivered the annual address. Papers on technical subjects were read and referred to committees.
