Miners Sweitzer and Tucker Die in Separate Mine Incidents
Coroner opens inquests into the deaths of Frank Sweitzer and W C Tucker, both miners injured in recent mining accidents. Eyewitnesses describe a sudden rock fall at the Rarns mine on the 400 level. Sweitzer died from embolism after leg injuries, while Tucker was killed in the Uclay mine during Thursday’s shift. Corroborating testimony from Foreman Treloar and others indicates no one responsible for the accidents.

Inquest Finds Tucker Died From Mine Rockfall
The 1880 inquest into miner W C Tucker's death at the Blue Jay mine heard Edward Connor testify that ground was being prepared for a timber set and that Tucker dismissed safety concerns. Witnesses noted Tucker was experienced but that the ground appeared unsafe. The verdict blamed the accident on rock and earth collapse with no fault assigned to the mine or managers.
