Marin county chambers voted to form a larger committee to study local street and road problems and create a county wide master plan. They discussed a possible countrywide road district but rejected it as overlapping taxation.
First graders at Laurel Dell school in San Rafael found a gopher snake on a radiator during a nature field trip in their classroom. The snake was moved to a science club by maintenance man Arthur Blade and two fifth graders, Dick Hawkins and Stephen Monte. The column also notes daylight saving time begins April 30 and ends September 24 as per Proposition 12.
J A Robinson founder of Sunset Produce in San Francisco was overdue after departing Moderne Yacht harbor in Sausalito yesterday. His body was found slumped over the controls aboard a 24 foot Navy surplus cabin cruiser, drifting about a half mile off Coyote Point in San Mateo County. The Marin sheriff and Coast Guard had searched mud flats and the shoreline all night. Coroner and Robinson family say it appears to be an accidental or natural death.
Merchants Express Corp of Sausalito files with the state PUC asking for a revised minimum freight rate schedule in Marin county. The petition argues current and proposed Marin rates are discriminatory versus east bay and peninsula points, seeking minimum charges from 54 cents to 1.05 dollars depending on weight and shipments.
San Rafael officials defend the city beautification program after Greenfield avenue residents petition to remove 34 pink locust saplings planted along the curb. The committee cites soil, maintenance, and ordinance considerations while noting the trees sit on city property between sidewalk and curb.
A San Francisco couple escaped serious injury when their car struck a horse on St Francis Drake boulevard near Greenbrae. Mr and Mrs Matthew J Butler 67 were returning to San Francisco at 7 05 pm. the strawberry roan horse valued at 500 died after rolling over the hood. The horse belonged to D Frank Monte of San Anselmo and gate neglect is suspected. Two other horses nearby were uninjured.
Twenty five Marin County hopefuls spoke at a Marin Jaycees sponsored spot light dinner at the Dutch Colonial in San Rafael. Speakers touted experience and pledges as incumbent leaders faced rivals in auditor, assessor and other offices.
Salmon fishing boats off the Golden Gate reported heavy catches this morning. The Skate skippered by Bill Davies sent word of several large salmon about three miles off Rocky Point, with Santos already having his limit before 8 a.m. Crew aboard included Don Bennett Len Fredericks Andy Ghilotti Art Teel and Joe Santos.
Site clearing began for the College of Marin’s new art building estimated at 350000 dollars. Bids for the south wing totaling 202747 dollars were awarded to B and R Construction of San Francisco. The project aims to be ready for Spring semester 1951 with classrooms and specialized art labs in the two story reinforced concrete wing.
The Legislature sent a $973,497,549 state budget to Governor Warren for signature after Senate passage 37 to 0 and Assembly approval 62 to 13. The plan includes a $200,000 Marin–Contra Costa bridge survey and a $3,000,000 child care subsidy, balancing a tightly balanced budget under Warren’s no new taxes policy.
North Marin Water District directors Frank Baccaglio and Virgil Hill won re election in Novato with 385 and 352 votes respectively. Write in candidate Anthony Garratti received 113 votes amid scattered write ins as the Novato Property Owners and Taxpayers Association opposed board policies. Paul Grimes noted the district relies on county assessor records for tax levies.
Judge N Charles Brusato Jr in San Rafael Justice Court postponed the narcotics violation trial of Dr Irving D Johnson former Marin County health officer for two weeks at the request of his attorney Walter Freitas. Johnson pleaded not guilty to three counts alleging illegal narcotics prescriptions for himself.
The Marin county Memorial Day committee led by Leonard Thomas will meet at the San Rafael courthouse tomorrow evening to hear progress reports from various committees. The meeting starts at 8 15 and all Marin veterans organizations are invited to attend.
Col. John Nance urged Sausalito Forum attendees to reject two Soviet beliefs the inevitability of capitalist collapse and a final war between blocs. He warned long term peace requires negotiation rather than preventive war. Dr. L L Stanley spoke of Siberia’s development potential and recounted a tale of a “hot air merchant” mistaken for Anthony Fokker.
Dr Charles D Stafford and John R Riker run for fire commissioner in the Novato volunteer fire district election. Stafford currently holds the seat and seeks re election. Polls at the Novato fire house will be open from 8 am to 7 pm.
