I J readers rally to salvage a Mill Valley aviary theft. Nick Nicolson, age about 70, regains most of his 32 birds after a story in the Independent Journal. A San Francisco friend sent nine canaries and others donated seven more from San Rafael and Mill Valley residents.
Wred Bagshaw, Mill Valley resident and former Mill Valley mayor, announced his run for state senate. Incumbent John F. McCarthy seeks reelection as Bagshaw, a past supervisor and bridge director, highlights decades in city county and state government.
A fragment notes handwriting sample in Marin County. Two Mill Valley women mailed on March 10 a dollar bill with a request for two patterns from the Independent Journal. The sender did not provide a name or additional identification. the letter was addressed in blue-black ink.
Two more southern Marin residents join the race for the supervisor post vacated by Chairman T. Fred Bagshaw. Charles B. Sloan former Mill Valley councilman and mayor joins with Donald W. Hallinegs Vera Schulty Stephen Balzan and Thomas McDougal in a field now totaling five. Sloan a retired licensed engineer and former city engineer for Mill Valley Sausalito brings long local service and prior campaigns. Billings a San Francisco Lighting sales rep and Marin Republican activist also enters with World War I service and two commendations.
Sausalito planning officials reveal a Waldo interchange study tied to widening Highway 101 from 4 to 6 lanes. Plans include Spencer avenue underpass, Monte Mar overpass, Rodeo overpass, frontage road between Spencer and Monte Mar, and increased bus stops. Two public hearings are set for March 20 and 37 at city hall.
Southeast storm warnings were issued north of Point Arena as a rain storm nears. Expect additional rainfall tonight across northern California with winds up to 40 miles per hour in affected areas.
A Marin county site decision for the county fair likely will be made March 31 at a 10 am meeting with Marin supervisors in San Rafael. A state official and aides will discuss an acre 140 site near Corte Madera with local leaders and Sen. John McCarthy.
The Ross recall election pits district superintendent Bliss against a public uproar over his four year contract set to expire in June. Trustees voted not to renew, triggering a split board. Recall organizers accuse Cahill and Bolles, while Bliss maintains public stance and says the vote should reflect community interest in the school.

A grease fire near a stove in the employees dining room at San Quentin spread to a second floor living quarters, damaging walls flooring and electrical wiring. Warden H Teets said the blaze, fanned by an exhaust duct, caused about 10000 in damage with no reported injuries. Correctional Sgt Paul Wiseman alerted fire crews at 8 49 am as 14 inmates helped battle the flames.
A public hearing is slated in Richmond City Hall on March 26 at 10 for a proposal by Army engineers to switch explosives anchorage from California Point to a site a mile away from Gen Pedro Point. Marin sports groups oppose the move, arguing it would restrict both pleasure boating and commercial activity in the area.
Independent-Journal reports San Rafael county supervisors plan to pay 35 000 for Fourth street and Grand avenue site for a health center while appraisals by H B Gramlee and Parrington Jones may value it around 28 000 The county clerk notes not all appraisal records are public and executive sessions are private with no formal offer found from former Supervisor Walter Castro.
Firefighters blamed a crack in the fireplace wall for a blaze at A. Andreini’s vacation home on Bar Trance Road in Forest Knolls. They arrived at 3:26 PM, cut through the roof, and extinguished flames between walls. Estimated damage was $75.

A birthday card postmarked Oakland arrived for Diana Darlene Pedroni, the 14-year-old Mill Valley girl who disappeared after a February 29 school dance. The note signed Love always Ding is believed to be from the missing teen. her grandmother, Mae Britton, says she’s confident Diana sent it. Pedroni’s father is a Mill Valley flying instructor and Diana had been living with her aunt in Oakland. Police report the evening’s date mentioned a passer-by dragging a girl into a car, and the family fears kidnapping.
Nellin C. Schlosser daughter of a forty niner couple who settled Tomales in 1857 died at 80 years old. Widow of John W. Schlosser San Rafael building inspector she lived in San Rafael for years and died at a daughter’s home. Survived by one daughter Mary Tranter. Funeral Saturday at 2 p m at Harry M Williams mortuary San Rafael. Burial Mt Tamalpais Cemetery.
