Mania county grand jury yesterday returned a manslaughter indictment against George Neller Jr. of Eureka the truck driver in the Alto Wye crash on April 26 that killed Albert E K Steele 97 of Belvedere. The indictment accuses gross negligence driving through a red signal causing collision with Steele s car. Steele died three days later at a San Francisco hospital. Neller to be arraigned in Main Superior Court June 22.
United States and Britain announced they have reached a broad agreement on a Japanese peace treaty. A joint communique was issued by John Foster Dulles and Herbert Morrison stating the accord is subject to approval by both governments.
Point Reyes Station readies the West Marin Livestock Show and Festival weekend. Saturday features a parade led by Tomales High band, marching groups and prize animal judging at Point Reyes Cow Palace, plus a coronation for Miss West Marin will be held. Sunday promises barbecue, dancing, a drill team exhibition, and family activities across Foresters Hall and surrounding venues.

Three SQ inmates George T Benstein 27 Los Angeles Jane s F Johnson 21 Los Angeles and Lloyd Lontinee 24 San Francisco were indicted by Marin County grand jury and will be arraigned June 22 in Superior Court on charges of illegal possession of knives. Guards found Bonstein and Lontine with knives May 28 and Johnson is accused of conspiring to obtain and conceal the knife.
The Defense Department announced a total of 70 317 American battle casualties in Korea, up 1 965 from a week earlier. Of these, 11 767 were deaths, 46 002 wounded, 10 211 listed as missing, 153 captured, and 1 284 previously listed as missing but returned to duty.
Marin County Federation of Teachers Local 1077 AFL announced plans to back the best candidate for county probation officer. Robert E. Bunker was named chairman of a committee to recommend a nominee after a meeting of the mental health and guidance committee at the Labor Temple in San Rafael.
Governor Warren signed the state budget authorizing 1,034,000,000 dollars for 1951 52 operations. He aimed for 1,016,000,000 and the bill includes funds for civil defense and state building with administration approval.

A Black Point truck driver, Arthur L. Johnson, 38, is in critical condition after a rear end collision with a flatbed lumber truck on Highway 101 north of Vallejo Street near Novato at 5 20 am. Johnson was trapped 45 minutes, then taken to San Rafael General Hospital with a fractured leg and possible internal injuries. The other driver was William H. Angerson, 39, of Arcata. CHP investigation continues into whether Johnson stopped or both trucks were moving. No citations issued by noon.
A coroner's jury found Manuel Souza not guilty in the death of six year old Barton Haldeman after a bicycle collision in Santa Venetia. The inquest determined the boy died from a fractured skull and brain injuries, with Dr. John Manwaring testifying the child was struck by the truck rather than run over. The boy was the son of Mrs. Marjorie Haldeman of Vendola Drive.
The assembly approved a bill prohibiting installation of television receivers in motor vehicles in any position where they could be viewed by the driver. The measure targets distracted driving and aims to curb in-car television viewing while operating a vehicle.

San Luis Obispo county grand jury announces a hearing next Tuesday into the fatal shooting of 22 year old Leonard D Ray Jr by 41 year old New York socialite Mrs Margaret G Ryan. Ryan was released on her own recognizance after a coroner verdict deemed the shooting unjustifiable homicide.
Former secretary of defense Johnson testified he urged a December 1949 Formosa military mission but Truman overruled due to State Department protests. He described late 1949 defense and State Department disputes, the Korea outbreak, and MacArthur memo influence on Formosa and Korea decisions.

James Collins a 17 year old San Anselmo boy injured in a June 3 airplane crash remains unconscious and in unchanged condition at St Marys hospital in San Francisco. He was an observer in civil aeronautics patrol maneuvers when the plane crashed west of Petaluma.
